Notepad & Snipping tool get AI upgrades
Microsoft has announced exciting updates for Notepad and the Snipping Tool, currently available for testing in Windows Insider builds. These features will roll out to stable versions after feedback and testing.
Notepad is getting AI-powered text summarization, allowing users to quickly condense content. Powered by Copilot, this feature requires users to sign in with their Microsoft Account. To summarize text, users can select it, right-click, and choose “Summarize” from the Copilot menu or use the shortcut “Ctrl + M”.
AI-generated summaries adjust based on text length, and the feature can be disabled in settings. Please keep in mind that Microsoft 365 subscribers will need to have AI credits to use this tool. Another useful addition to Notepad is the “recent files” feature, making it easier to reopen closed documents from the File menu.
The Snipping Tool is also getting an upgrade with the “Draw & Hold” feature. This allows users to refine rough shapes into precise lines and figures. After taking a screenshot (Windows logo key + Shift + S), users can draw a shape, hold for a moment, and watch it automatically refine. The shape can then be adjusted before saving.
These updates are currently rolling out to Windows Insider users and will soon be available for all Windows users after testing.
