Chrome 88 will come equipped with Manifest V3 support for the Declarative Net Request API along with other changes. This update will bring feature changes in the Chromium project which will result in a number of restrictions for Chrome extensions.
It appears that Ad Blockers will be most affected by this update as they will stop working properly. uBlock Origin and Ghostery are the first on the list of extensions that are known for being incompatible with the Manifest V3. According to Google, some extensions can obtain sensitive information from the user which is inadmissible.
Additionally, Manifest V3 will prevent extensions from running remote codes, and while this is a good thing, many extensions that run custom user scripts for changing the appearance and behavior of web sites will stop working.
Chromium-Edge browser from Microsoft will follow Google with this change as the company is already testing the Manifest V3 feature. On the other hand, other Chromium-based browsers Vivaldi and Brave won’t enable Manifest V3 and will resist it for as long as they can.
Mozilla will not and don’t have any plans to adopt this change for its popular Firefox browser.
Still, Manifest V2 will remain available for some time although Google did not define a removal date yet. Chrome 88 is planned to be released in January 2020 and from then on Google will accept extensions that are compatible with Manifest V3 in its store.
