Microsoft is investigating reports of a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) issue that appeared on specific Windows 11 computers after the installation of a recent update, KB5029351. This update, which was released earlier this week, brings the typical monthly fixes, but it seems to be causing problems specifically on computers with MSI motherboards.
According to a note from Microsoft’s Windows health center, the company is actively looking into the matter to determine if the issue is originating from their end. They plan to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
Some users reported this problem on their Windows 11 gaming PC equipped with an Intel Core i9-13900KS processor and an MSI MPG Z690 Carbon WiFi motherboard combo. Various Reddit users have also shared their experience of encountering the same BSOD error after applying the mentioned update. These users are also using Intel-based systems with MSI motherboards and the latest BIOS updates.
Fortunately, Windows 11 systems experiencing the BSOD are able to recover and revert the patch. It appears that Microsoft has removed the problematic KB5029351 update from the affected systems list, while it remains accessible for others. The update underwent testing through Microsoft’s usual Windows Insider program and Release Preview ring before being distributed to retail installations of Windows 11.
While the root cause is not yet clear, the issue could be linked to MSI’s recent BIOS updates that are related to Intel’s upcoming 14th Gen desktop CPUs, codenamed Raptor Lake-S Refresh. MSI had issued BIOS updates for Z690 and Z790 motherboards to “support next-gen CPUs.” All Reddit users who faced the issue were using the latest MSI BIOS update, with one user reporting that downgrading the BIOS allowed the KB5029351 update to be installed.
