The most recent version of Windows 11, known as build 23615 was released earlier this week and now supports USB4 Gen 4. This updated USB standard can achieve speeds of up to 80Gbps on compatible hardware.
The USB Implementers Forum introduced the USB4 specification back in August 2019, and Microsoft implemented USB4 support in the initial release of Windows 11 (version 21H2) two years later. In September 2022, USB4 2.0 was introduced with modes offering speeds of 80 and 120Gbps, utilizing the now-standard Type-C connector. Microsoft is ensuring its operating system is compatible with the latest USB generation, which will soon be featured in the first consumer products.
According to the release notes for Windows 11 build 23615, the enhanced performance of USB4 2.0 “enables the next generation of high-performance displays, storage, and connectivity.” USB4 2.0 is fully compatible with hardware designed for older USB and Thunderbolt generations using the Type-C connector.
However, to experience USB4 2.0 support, the latest hardware is required, available in the latest Windows 11 preview build. Microsoft said that USB4 2.0 80Gbps will initially be available only on select devices featuring Intel’s recently introduced 14th Gen mobile processors. The new Razer Blade 18 will be among the first Windows laptops to support USB4 2.0.
Additionally, Windows 11 build 23615 introduces the option to open Copilot when Windows starts. This feature is being tested on multi-monitor devices with a primary monitor of 27 inches or larger and a minimum width of 1920 pixels. The positive aspect is that Copilot autostart is a feature that can be disabled in the Settings app.
