A Windows Information Protection or WIP, previously called Enterprise Data Protection or EDP, is Microsofts’ security tool designed to prevent accidental data leakage through personal email accounts, social platforms, personal email accounts, etc. Just to be clear, Microsoft stated that WIP should not be used for protection against malicious insiders, but rather to prevent accidental leakage of company data.
Purview, on the other hand, is a data governance platform that offers many capabilities including Data Loss Prevention (DLP), meaning that it has many links with WIP. This probably is the reason why Microsoft is phasing out older products in favor of Purview which will be regularly updated.
Purview beautifully works in heterogeneous environments and offers state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers for protection against many unwanted scenarios like accidental data leakage, money laundering harassment, corporate sabotages, and more.
Windows Information Protection or WIP will continue to function, but without new features being added. WIP will also continue to be supported on supported versions of Windows.
With this change, Microsoft is encouraging its enterprise customers to try Purview Information Protection and consider migration from WIP.
