Microsoft has streamlined its Teams app into a single, unified platform. Previously, Teams existed as two separate apps for work and personal use on Windows 11, causing confusion among users. Now, the new app, launched on Tuesday, merges work, individual, and educational accounts into one app that is compatible with Windows 11, Windows 10, and Macs.
Originally, Teams were primarily used for business communication. However, with the introduction of Windows 11, Microsoft aimed to expand its functionality for personal use. This resulted in two distinct apps, each with its layout and features, which were poorly received.
The updated app addresses user feedback, allowing them to switch seamlessly between accounts without needing separate apps. If Teams is already installed on your device, it will be automatically updated. Otherwise, it can be downloaded from the Teams website or iOS and Android app stores.
Upon launching the app, users can view all their accounts—whether for work, school, or personal use—in one place. Switching between accounts is simple, requiring only a quick profile selection. Personal users of Teams can still enjoy free features like scheduling meetings, chatting, and file sharing. Notifications are clearly labeled with the relevant account, making it easier to manage them.
This new, unified version of Teams is currently named “Microsoft Teams (work or school)” but will eventually be simplified to just “Microsoft Teams.” Meanwhile, the standalone personal version, “Microsoft Teams (free),” will be phased out.
