Mozilla discountinues FTP support in Firefox
Mozilla is about to discontinue FTP support in its popular browser Firefox. The company will drop the FTP support out of the box in version 77 planned for June 2, 2020.
According to Mozilla, dropping FTP support was a logical move considering that the FTP protocol is outdated and is hard to maintain in modern browsers. FTP is also insecure and prone to MITM attacks.
Similar to Firefox’s decision, Google is also removing FTP from its Chrome browser in version 80, but only for selected users. Complete removal of the FTP code will be done in Chrome 82. According to Google, only 0.1% of Chrome users are using FTP.
To replace Firefox FTP, Mozilla recommends using other apps for FTP tasks like the FileZilla which can be used either for FTP client or FTP server purposes.
