WinRAR, the Windows version of RAR Archiver, is a powerful archiving and archive management tool. RAR files typically achieve up to 30 percent higher compression efficiency than ZIP files. WinRAR boasts numerous features, including robust document and multimedia file compression, file encryption, support for other archive formats, programmable self-extracting (SFX) archives, damaged archive repair, and Unicode support.
The final version of WinRAR 6.20 has recently been released, marking another milestone for RARLAB.COM and win.rar GmbH. WinRAR continues to undergo improvements to offer users stable and reliable software for compressing, securing, and archiving personal and business data. The latest version delivers faster RAR5 compression, automatic password processing, enhanced repair command efficiency, and other usability enhancements.
One of the new and notable addition is the automatic password processing feature. When the “Autodetect passwords” option is enabled in the “Organize passwords” dialog, WinRAR will automatically utilize passwords for RAR5 and ZIP archives if a matching password is present in the list of saved passwords. This option can be found at File > Set Default Password > Organize Passwords. Furthermore, the detection of incorrect passwords for ZIP archives has been improved. If the stored passwords do not include the correct one and the extraction of an encrypted ZIP archive fails, users can disable this option, retry the extraction, and then manually enter the correct password.
The RAR5 compression speed has also been enhanced for poorly compressible data on modern CPUs with eight or more execution threads. This improvement applies to all compression methods except the Fastest one which remains unchanged.
The repair command’s efficiency has also been boosted for “shuffled data blocks” in RAR5 archives with recovery record protection. This enhancement allows users to repair damaged data even in cases of disk defects or other possible data losses. It is worth mentioning that recovery records are not supported in the ZIP format. Additionally, the size of recovery records is now displayed on the archive page of the file properties in Explorer.
