  1. Yup, you're not the only one who asked me this question. This sentence I quoted can be wrongly interpreted, I should've write it better
  2. Of course not, everything will be as it is now only faster
  3. Yup, I know, but this tip shows how useful could be search bar in the start menu of Vista It's easier for some users to access System Configuration Utility by typing that in the search menu then typing msconfig 'cause they probably haven't heard for that shortcut before
  4. If there's one thing that puts me off an application, it's when it unnecessarily inserts itself into the Windows startup process so that it can have its very own system tray icon from whence it can spam me with annoying messages. Obviously it makes sense for some applications to run on startup (for example, I want Windows Live Messenger to be running without me needing to manually start it each time). The problem is that there are multiple places where an application can register itself for execution on startup, and this makes it hard to retain control over which programs are granted such esteemed status. Of course, I wouldn't be writing this entry unless Windows Vista had a solution! From the start menu search bar, type System Configuration, and click on the link that comes up. You'll be required to provide privilege elevation unless you've disabled UAC, and then you'll see the following utility: As you can see from the above screenshot, the Startup tab enumerates all the applications that are set to run as startup, regardless of whether they are set in the registry (either per-machine or per-user), the user profile, or simply the startup folder in the Programs entry of the start menu. You can disable any or all of them; they'll still be listed there so that you can switch them on again if you need to. I should note in passing that this tool also allows you to do some other pretty useful things, like editing your boot configuration database (no need to master arcane bcdedit commands any longer) or accessing a variety of other system tools and utilities. It's the power user's configuration tool of choice - go check it out! Tim Sneath Blog
  5. WinCert.net is changing hosting provider and will be hosted at MSFN Hosting on Sunday 10/01/06. DNS propagation will take up to 72 hours and during that time WinCert.net will be unavailable. WinCert.net will be hosted on a faster, Dual Core Opteron Server from now on which should result with much better performance. I hope you'll have patience and toleration during this action and hopefully join us again after the sucessfull move. Sincerely WinCert.net Team!
  6. So, you want to BitLocker an existing computer? The other day I decided, probably against better judgement, to turn on BitLocker on my laptop running Windows Vista RC1+. There were several concerns about doing that though: My machine is a Dell Latitude D620, which does not have a TPM chip of any kind. That means that my only option is to use a USB key for BitLocker. When I installed my machine I let the Windows Vista installer partition the drive for me. That means I had one large partition covering the whole drive You mean you are turning on whole hard disk encryption on a beta OS? What are you thinking? Let
  7. Vista has something neat in it called junctions. Junctions are very useful and you can create your own. Open up a command prompt and type 'Mklink /?' and you will be presented with the necessary information for creating your own junctions in Vista. How about a junction that looks like a folder but when you copy files to it they are directed to your web site some where on the internet immediately....drag and drop for the internet without any other client needed (FTP, front page, P2P stuff, etc...) OK, the truth now, junctions are not new as they have been in NTFS based OS's for a while. Vista just calls them symlinks - actually symlinks are new but they are so close to what junctions are. What is new is that MS has provided the MKlink command line tool to create your own 'symlinks' in Vista where as in the past the tools were not part of the OS. Why are they new for Vista? Because this is the first time that the use of symlinks/junctions have been so obvious in a MS OS, so in a sense they are 'new'. I used the 'junction' term here because thats what those who used past OS were familiar with.
  8. The awesome guys from the Windows Vista Magazine revealed a great Windows Vista secret recently that I wanted to bring to a broader audience. When you're browsing around the file system in Explorer, it's often useful to be able to quickly switch between different folder views. If you're looking at a folder with lots of long filenames, maybe the Details view works best. If you're looking at a folder with lots of photos, maybe a small thumbnail view works well; for a folder with lots of documents, maybe a larger thumbnail view works better. Now you can use the Views button on the toolbar to modify this - click the button to toggle between views or use the down arrow to get access to the slider - but it's quicker to use a shortcut. Simply hold down the Ctrl key and use your mouse scrollwheel to resize the icons from small to extra large. What's really cool about this, as Jon points out, is that it also works on the desktop itself. If the desktop has focus, simply do Ctrl+mousewheel and you can go from the regular 48x48 icons to full 256x256 photographic-quality renditions. For those of you who have a desktop filled with documents and shortcuts, you can of course also use this feature to cram even more on your screen so that you never have to create a folder again! If you wish to test Vista RC1 and all of the upcoming builds you should register here. and you'll be rewarded with a download link and a valid serial to use. Then you can try it out and tell us how much it rocks/sucks, depending on your expectations of what this OS is going to do for your work/productivity/marriage/sex life etc...
  13. Here is how to get rid of the word 'Shortcut' on shortcuts in Vista. make your own with the below or use the .reg file i've attached to this post: ; get rid of the word 'Shortcut' on shortcuts ; this is the original value ; [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] ; "link"=hex:1e,00,00,00 ; this is the changed value to get rid of word 'Shortcut' [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "link"=hex:00,00,00,00 Reboot after you do this. It will not get rid of the word 'Shortcut' on the shortcuts created before this reg entry, it will only not put the word 'Shortcut' on those you create after this reg entry is done. I included the original value also in case you want to go back, just comment the changed value and un-comment the original value to and merge it again and reboot. no_shoct.zip
  14. You can get rid of the shortcut arrows in vista by using an old reg tweak that still works: Open up regedit and go to: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile] Then re-name 'IsShortcut' to 'AriochIsShortcut' in the right pane. Close regedit and reboot - shortcut arrows are gone.
  15. Vista doesn't have a 'Copy To' or 'Move To' that works everywhere. This reg tweak will add that capability to the right click context menu. You can make your own by using the text below: ;add 'Copy to Folder' to right click context [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}] ;add 'Move to Folder' to right click context [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}] or...you can use the copy_move_to.reg file I attached to this post. copy_move_to.zip
  16. Great work cyg, if you plan to update it I'll pin it up
  17. For the first time in the history of eSport, a video game has been specially developed for the Electronic Sports World Cup and is being offered free of charge to the players of the entire planet so they may commence training for the qualifiers due to take place in 53 countries on Friday 27th of January. The Grand Final of ESWC will be held in Paris from June 28th to July the 2nd , in front of 40,000 people, where the best players from each country will battle it out for a prize of 400,000 dollars. This special version features a brand new environment, the Stadium, and a revolutionary new gameplay designed for Nadeo's own custom cars. Nadeo has pulled the technological rabbit from the hat with their own brand game engine, featuring the series' best graphics yet, finely tuned for the latest generation graphics cards, not forgetting simpler machines so that no one round the world has a technical freeze out on the race track. With the online in-game ladder, players can customise their cars and avatars and race in their nation's colours on the world's servers from Friday onwards. Many Trackmania and Trackmania Sunrise players will already have access to the following exclusive features: peer 2 peer data exchange and skin and avatar customisation. The countdown to Trackmania Nations ESWC going online on Friday has commenced; in the meantime, we suggest you view the official trailer and we let the motors do the talking instead. Get it here.
