Oh.

True story from the Bold_Fortune Archives. Some years ago, I hit a very large jackpot on a machine at one of the Indian Casinos. Considering I was playing with my last $80 in the world, it just sort of fit.

Yes, but now I have a serious commitment to keep all three guides updated. Both you and N1K at WinCert have been too very supportive for me to overlook that...I wouldn't be able to live with myself. (Me and John Wayne, men of our word, Pilgrim. )

This beats the heck out of me, but I just bumped into my site...and it's back up. Nobody tells me anything. LOL. How did this happen? This is kicking my a$$. Been done for a month, I have gotten no word on it. And now this. Go figure. http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?act=idx Not to worry, N1K, I'll still be loyal to you and honor my obligation here on WinCert. My guide shall remain here, and I shall promote it's being here.

Select your country's time on this site, and post the URL here, so I'll know if you're half asleep when I'm talking to you. :type: :sleeping_03anim: http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_US-CA.aspx

How long will Microsoft support XP? A Good Reason To Be Sure You Update To SP2 I've seen many posts on the Internet by users who still refuse to update to SP2, for whatever reasons--even at this late date of its release. They should know about this... How long will Microsoft support XP? Windows XP has been extremely successful; market research firm IDC estimates that Windows XP (Home and Pro) had a worldwide installed base of 538 million copies at the end of 2006. (Wow!) As long as those XP computers are functional and perform well, users find it difficult to justify the purchase of Vista or a new Vista-based PC. Microsoft Corp.'s support policies reflect this reality. The company's standard life-cycle policy provides bug fixes and security patches (known as mainstream support) for five years after initial release, and security-patch-only support (known as extended support) for an additional five years. Although Microsoft often doesn't provide extended support for its consumer products, the company says that XP Home and XP Pro will get identical support periods. Microsoft's support road map currently says that extended support for Windows XP ends in April 2014. You need to be on the latest service pack within one year of its release for continued support, which at this point means you must be running XP Service Pack 2. So the earliest date that XP SP2 support will end is 2014, but history has shown that Microsoft often gives customers a reprieve as these dates draw near. For example, support for Windows 98 was to be dropped in January 2004, but Microsoft extended it by two and a half years to July 2006. XP's life would also be extended if Microsoft were to issue an XP service pack on or after 2013. Microsoft has a tentative date for XP Service Pack 3 in the first half of 2008. If SP3 is released anywhere near on schedule and turns out to be the last service pack for XP, it won't affect XP's 2014 end-of-support date. http://www.computerworld.com/action/articl...9026940#support

I am currently in the process of promoting WinCert, and my guide being placed here on the site. Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide can be a tremendous draw for WinCert. ...But only with your help! As many of you already know...I am not proud. :naughty: Having owned retails stores at one time or another in my life, I've come to know that "being proud" and "promoting your business" don't belong in the same sentence. I am placing this message on a few forums. I ask that you place it on your favorite forums. Copy the text between the lines, and paste the message on one or two of your favorite sites. I'll appreciate it, and I'm sure N1K, as owner of this site, will appreciate it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Message From Bold_Fortune As many of you already know, my site is down. It will remain down. It was never really "my" site, it belonged to a generous lady named Sadie who lives in England. She gave it to me to support my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide. The guide was always for you. That is why I created it. It is my gift to those who always wanted to know which files they can delete from Windows XP, but couldn't find their answers...my site was only an afterthought. WinCert.net is now graciously hosting my guide for you in its entirety. I will keep my guide updated there on WinCert.net. People have posted my guide on their sites without my permission. These copies are older versions, and are not up-to-date. Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide has always been, and will always be, "a work in progress". I edit and make changes to its contents on a continuous basis. I will continue my work there on WinCert.net. So for the best and latest version you will need to look there. http://www.wincert.net/forum/index.php?showforum=122 Sincerely, Bold_Fortune ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We've spent quite a few years tweaking and taming Windows XP. It will take quite a bit of time to tweak and tame Windows Vista, too...but it will eventually be done. ...I'm just not interested in going through that all over again. XP seems to serve my purposes.

Another "Getting To Know You" thread. Where did you hangout before N1K put up WinCert? I had my own forum for a few years, the now defunct Bold_Fortune Forums.

How much music you got on your computer?
Bold_Fortune replied to cygnus's topic in General Discussion
I have 26.7 GB of music. 5,562 songs. Lots of oldies and classic rock. It's all pretty nicely sorted into Complete LPs and Complete Playlists. The remarkable thing is I actually burned everything to to playable CDs. (I'm a safety kinda guy.) I also have everything burned to data DVDs. Movies, I have about a gazillion. I converted and burned about four hundred movies to playable DVDs. Then I got a 500GB hardrive for movies I keep on the hardrive. I burn those to data DVDs five or six at a time. I had, for about two days, a home DVD player that plays AVI files. I returned it because it was a piece of junk, but I have intentions of getting a better one in the near future. -

I'm finding a whole lot of things I like about your site, N1K. You're doing a great job at its presentation. ...And the people here seem very nice, too.

Tada!

Hi, terrin. I'm not sure if this is going to help you, but maybe if you understand a little bit more about Themes you can help yourself out. I am not suggesting your delete any of these files, only showing this to you to help you understand better Themes. From PART 5 C:\WINDOWS\Resources Contains files to support the user's shell interface. (Themes.) Windows will not let you delete the C:\WINDOWS\Resources folder. --------------------------------------- C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes You can delete the Themes folder and its contents if you want, but read on first... Once you have your system setup for using a particular "Luna Style" theme, you can actually delete most of the Themes folder contents. Contained in the Themes folder are the Luna subfolder, the Luna.theme, and the Windows Classic.theme. The Luna subfolder contains the Shell subfolder and the luna.msstyles. The Shell subfolder contains these subfolders: Metallic, Homestead and NormalColor. Each of these three subfolders contains its own shellstyle.dll. Much of the internal colors and file bitmaps are contained in the shellstyle.dll. The shellstyle.dll is also used for the visual-style effects in task windows, such as in the Add or Remove Programs panel. The luna.msstyles does not contain all the information for the Windows XP style Theme (Luna Theme). However, you do need the luna.msstyles if you want to use a Luna Theme. Here's where it gets tricky. There is also a shellstyle.dll in the system32 folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32). You can delete the shellstyle.dll from the system32 folder, as long as you keep the Themes folder, its Luna subfolder, and the one Shell subfolder of the particular "Luna Style" theme you are using (Metallic, Homestead or NormalColor), along with its shellstyle.dll. Let me show you... Let's assume you have seleted and are using Metallic (Silver Color Scheme) for your Luna Theme. Delete these files and subfolders: In C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes Delete the Luna.theme Delete Windows Classic.theme In C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna\Shell Delete the Homestead folder and its shellstyle.dll. Delete the NormalColor and it shellstyle.dll. And then you can delete the shellstyle.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32. To see the visual-style of the Add or Remove Programs panel, you must keep either the shellstyle.dll that is in the system32 folder, or the shellstyle.dll of the particular Luna Theme you are using. More importantly, without at least one of these shellstyle.dll presence, you will be unable to enter the Add or Remove Programs panel. If you choose to use the Windows Classic Theme, you can fully delete the Themes folder and all its contents. But if you choose to use the Windows Classic theme, and delete the Themes folder and its contents, you will still need the shellstyle.dll that is in the system32 folder in order to gain access to the Add or Remove Programs panel. ---------------------------------------

So where's everybody from, so I'll know which language to cuss at you in? I don't know how to cuss in any of the languages peculiar to Himalaya, so you guys will need to learn English. I'm from San Diego, California. Well, I've lived here since I was 8 years old. I was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, just down the street from the famous Fisherman's Monument...(the statue at the end of the movie, Captain's Courageous).

Bonjour Mademoiselle. LOL. You didn't know I speak French, did you, MaisOui? Well, I don't, I had to look up the spelling for that.

That's what it would need, N1K, for the guide and its sub categories to fit properly. For example, like you have your "News, Support, Discussions" forum. http://www.wincert.net/forum/index.php?act=idx The top forum would be "Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide". Upon opening it will have on the first thread the complete guide and all it's parts. And then the guide's individual parts will be set up like I have it on Jan's site... http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showforum=68 The second would be for "Discussions About Slimming Down Windows XP", (where hopefully others smarter than I will answer any questions about deleting files.) The third, a subforum for "The System32 File Indexer". I'll need to do considerable work on this changing the links to match your site. Here's an example of one file in the "A's" (Then there's "B's", "C's" and so forth for its sub categories.) A3d.dll.........PART 10 under Creative Live! 24-bit Sound Card Files The fourth would be for "Windows XP Services Companion", a major supplement for PART 2 of the guide, offering information about Services. The fifth, "My Personal Batch Files Are Available Here", so I can point to where and how anyone who appreciates my work enough to make a donation can receive my personal batch files. http://boldfortune.blogspot.com/ As far as the title of the forum, I would prefer "Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide". NOTE: There could be one problem, and that is the size of posts allowed on your forum. I'd prefer not to break up any PARTS of the guide into two parts. As you can see as examples PARTS 2 and PARTS 9 of the guide, and the Windows XP Services Companion, are quite lengthy.

I appreciate the offer. I'll certainly keep it in mind should the present situation change. Right now, however, Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide will remain on Jan's site. I'd just like to go back to working quietly on my guide. Having my own site was a bit like sticking out my chin to be taken a poke at by every Tom, *** and fanboy. And I'm sure moderating a forum here wouldn't be much different. It just gets tiring being a target. I've never quite been able to some it up. I've tried many times, but I just can't get it quite right. Jan was there with me on the old TweakXP site where I first began publishing my adventures in file-deleting. We're talkin' a very long time ago. Six years maybe. The administrator there would get so p-oed at me because I would tell people which files they could delete. Disclaimers ran rampant on practically every post I made about deleting files: "We here at TweakXP do not recommend this!" Forum members there would sometimes jump down my throat, too. Nowadays, Slimming Down your Windows XP installation is practically considered cool. While deleting files became more mainstream, something else began occuring... The insults come mostly now from people who seem to have something to protect. Like the fanboys of nLite do. Or from some "Mastertech" type person, who has need to assert (and win) that his or her way of doing things is the only way, and the right way. People have mentioned a feud between me and nuhi, the creator of nLite. No such feud ever existed until the nLite fanboys made so much about something I wrote in Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide. What is that "feud" about? It's right here, in PART 1 of my guide...right under "Why I Don't Use Programs Like XPLite and nLite". http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=9399 And that's all it's ever been about, my reason why I do not use file-removal programs. You see, the nLite fanboys have something to protect. "How dare I attack their beloved program, and their fair leader, nuhi?!" Well, I didn't...and I never did. That was all I ever said about nLite. I simply stated why I don't use file-removal programs, and gave some pretty good examples why I don't. (You may also noticed it at the same time I was talking about XPLite, too...but the nLite fanboys seemed to ignore that part.) These criticisms are something I've had to live with for a very long time, in one form or another, and from one source or another. And this kind of thing never stops. Even today, when dirtwarrior asked on MSFN about my site being down, he was given this response from Zxian, one of the forum moderators... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=103412 So, I think I'll just back off from the public limelight for awhile, and quietly go back to work on my guide. Again, thank you for your offer. Sincerely, Bold_Fortune

Hi, dirtwarrior! I bumped into this thread doing a search for me. Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated. My site is down, and will remain down. It was never really "my" site, it belonged to Sadie, a lady who lives in England. She gave it to me to support my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide. You can read more about it here... http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=9354 ....Jan has hosted the guide for you in the event of something like this happening. Jan's copy of my guide is the only copy that I have granted permission to host, and it is the only copy posted on the Internet I keep updated. It's there for you when you need it. The guide was always for you. That's why I created it. It is my gift to those who always wanted to know which files they can delete from Windows XP, but couldn't find their answers...my site was only an after thought. The guide is here for you when you need it... http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showforum=68 ....Sincerely, Bold_Fortune
