  1. The best I understand, is that Win Toolkit "removes" things the official way through DISM, so as you say it removes "unused components that won't take less space off the disc, but will take more space off the hard drive", ie it doesn't remove anything off the install disc, it just doesn't install those things so it makes your installed system a little smaller. Cheers and Regards
  2. For those getting a "Web page not available" type error when trying to access an adf.ly link, if all else fails be sure to check your host file to make sure there is not an entry for adf.ly. That was what was wrong with my system. Cheers and Regards
  3. Not for me, same problem, including for the adfly site itself. I wonder why? EDIT: This is working fine now. Cheers and Regards
  4. Well, I said that because http://adf.ly currently gets the same "This webpage is not available" response. Cheers and Regards
  5. It's not just Rick's app. All of adf.ly is currently non-responsive. Cheers and Regards
  6. RicaNeaga, it really does work just fine on Win7 x64 with no errors whatsoever when run post login as ricktendo explained, at least it does on my Win7 x64 system. Cheers and Regards
  7. I have been suggesting this for a while. Now we'll just need to set it up such that one guy isn't saddled with the burden of maintaining it. Then there will be less of a likelihood of another burnout. Cheers and Regards
  8. KUC now appears to be here - http://windows-update-checker.com/. Cheers and Regards
  9. Already added by what? Cheers and Regards
  10. Threads merged. Cheers and Regards
  11. On second thought, being paranoid I might still choose to write it like this: SetEnvironment="Path=\"%ProgramFiles%\\WinRAR\\\"" at least once, just to see if I saw any difference in behavior, but again I'll stress that I have not tried it this way myself. And of course since I'd still be surrounding appdata anyway, the consistency appeals to me. Cheers and Regards
  12. Isn't necessary when we use variable value... test, works perfect... While that might be true, I haven't verified it in all circumstances, I personally agree with mooms and would choose to err on the side of caution and include the \" , as long as including them does not cause a problem. I guess I've been burned too many times by apps that "should" handle embedded spaces correctly, but sometimes don't for some reason. But I don't see a problem with this method, AFAIK, but I haven't tried it that way myself. Neat approach! Cheers and Regards
  13. @Thiersee, look carefully at the link that mooms provided, specifically MU.zip along with the post by Etz above it. If I understand it correctly, I believe it is a way to enable Microsoft Update without activating the compatibility mode. Cheers and Regards
  14. This might be a dumb question, but why can't PointZero create the index, but point to MS for each file so that each user is always downloading directly from MS? Kind of like the way that AutoPatcher had to change a few years ago. I don't think that MS would get mad about that, so PointZero should have an easier time finding a place to host his index. Just a thought. Cheers and Regards
  15. OK, dumb question. (I'm sure I'll do a face palm when you tell me. ) What exactly are the Microsoft FixIt files, and where do you get them / how do you create them? For the drivers, assuming you need to deal with more than one computer, with possible different hardware involved, I would suggest using the DriverPack SAD2 script. Cheers and Regards
  16. I thought so too, and it still might be, but I went to his site and I didn't see that he was trying to sell anything, and I knew a couple of his friends he has linked there. (I don't know if malware has gotten smart enough to spoof that yet or not?) So I figured I would give him the benefit of the doubt for now and wait and see what he does. Cheers and Regards
  17. DXCB can also make an UN-installer that can completely remove DirectX9 from your system, no matter from what OS, XP and later, no matter what language your OS is, and no matter how DirectX9 was installed. I never knew why MS never bothered to do so. The installers made via DXCB are the smallest ones I know of, and can be made to fit your system's requirements, 32bit only, 32bit plus 64bit for 64bit systems, optional DirectX for managed code, etc. Addons can be made for use by RVMi or nLite on XP, and the switchless installers can be applied to a running system with no problem. [/shameless plug] Cheers and Regards
  18. Haven't noticed anything, yet, but then that is the way it should be. Thanks, Nik. Cheers and Regards
  19. @compstuff, when you get a method that works for you, I would love to see you spell out in detail the steps you use to get there, since it seems the results you desire, ie agreement between KUC, McRip, and WU/MU, should be what we all desire. (With possibly a sysprep'd build for installation efficiency.) Cheers and Regards
  20. What dareckibmw means is that we are here to help you, not do it for you. Try it yourself, then tell us exactly what you did, what happened vs what you expected to happen, and we'll go from there. Cheers and Regards
  21. Thanks Rick! Cheers and Regards

    Spammers

I think the best common definition for spammers that we can all agree with is that they are folks that send you, or post, unrequested and unwanted advertisements or suggestions to go to other web sites, usually multiple times if they can get away with it, all with the hoped for, by them, end result that you will spend needless money for unnecessary or overpriced items and/or give them leads to others who will fall for their ploys, or at the very least, waste your time deleting their unwanted ads.. As ricktendo says -- junk mail. Folks that post multiple questions can sometimes be annoying, usually unintentionally, but they are not spammers. If they show that they are willing to follow suggestions, and read and make an effort to find the answers themselves, then they are more than welcome here. It is hoped that they will then become a valued contributing member who is willing to then give back to the community and share what they learn and help others. If someone continues to ask the same pointless questions, or ones that have been answered over and over again, without making the slightest effort to search for the answer and help themselves, or they continue to argue with the people that try to help them, or are rude, or refuse to follow suggestions or provide asked for information, that person is still not a spammer, but they will quickly be ignored. If their behavior continues to get more and more rude and/or abusive then they risk being banned for their bad behavior. Wincert is an easy going kind of place that is very accepting of others and has a lot of very helpful information and people. We all, new members and veterans alike, have try our best to deal with misunderstandings that come up, usually due to either language/cultural differences or simply different knowledge or experience levels. I hope you will continue to have good experiences here. Cheers and Regards
  23. Welcome to Wincert! Cheers and Regards
  24. However, if you want to provide links to free tools, and scripts or instructions so that the user can customize their own legitimate copy of the OS, such as Win Toolkit, nLite, etc, that is perfectly OK. Cheers and Regards
