Jack PC
Click to enlarge U.K. firm Jade Integration has unveiled a computer so small, it fits into a wall socket and is powered via Ethernet. The Jack PC, a rival to the smallest PC in the world, can hook up to a standard monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and runs Windows CE, the stripped-down version of Windows often used in portable devices. It comes with up to 64 MB of flash memory and 128 megs of RAM, so don't expect to play Half-Life 2 on it, but it should be able to handle basic Internet functions decently. Some geek talk... The units utilise the latest AMD Au 1550 RISC processors running at either 333 or 500MHz. That's the equivalent of a 800MHz or 1.2GHz x86 desktop processor. They have either 32 or 64MB flash memory to store the operating system (Windows CE .NET 4.2/5) and 64 or 128MB RAM. They can be powered either through a plug on the front or, ideally, using Power over Ethernet (PoE). PoE means the unit is powered over existing structured network cabling from a suitable PoE switch or PoE power injector. Click to enlarge More about Jack PC

Mars rover ready for descent into Victoria Crater
NASA's Mars rover Opportunity is scheduled to begin a descent down a rock-paved slope into the Red Planet's massive Victoria Crater. This latest trek carries real risk for the long-lived robotic explorer, but NASA and the Mars Rover science team expect it to provide valuable science. This image captured by Opportunity shows "Cape St. Vincent," one of the many promontories that jut out from the walls of Victoria Crater. It is presented in false color to accentuate differences in surface materials. Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell Opportunity already has been exploring layered rocks in cliffs around Victoria Crater. The team has planned the descent carefully to enable an eventual exit, but Opportunity could become trapped inside the crater or lose some capabilities. The rover has operated more than 12 times longer than its originally intended 90 days. The scientific allure is the chance to examine and investigate the compositions and textures of exposed materials in the crater's depths for clues about ancient, wet environments. As the rover travels farther down the slope, it will be able to examine increasingly older rocks in the exposed walls of the crater. Full story: SpaceflightNow

ZoneAlarm for Vista
The advantage of the ZoneAlarm firewall over the built-in Vista firewall is that ZoneAlarm will only allow those programs you specifically ok to access the Internet. Microsoft's Vista firewall does allow this kind of outbound filtering, but the feature disabled by default. Not only that, it's hidden and buried - you can't even get to it through the normal Windows Firewall interface. ZoneAlarm's free firewall, by contrast, will display a pop-up if a new program attempts to access the Internet. That program will be blocked until you allow it. Check Point, ZoneAlarm's maker, says it is the first vendor to use Vista's Windows Filtering Platform API, but from the end-user's perspective I didn't see anything different in the interface compared to the XP version I've tried before. That interface includes plenty of pop-ups that you may or may not want, and that may or may not help. Outbound connection alerts can help to block malware that gets past your antivirus software and tries to send your stolen data to an Internet repository, for example, but you need to be know how to tell whether an alert is for a valid program or malware. How to Add/Hide software in Add/Remove programs
Ever want to remove some of those little programs you never use that ship with Windows XP? Sure, they're not taking up much space, and hard drives are cheap these days. But it's the principle of the thing, right? And some of these programs don't show up on the Windows XP Add/Remove programs menu. Well, it appears that the only thing keeping you from uninstalling WordPad, Pinball, or other programs is one word in the sysoc.inf file. You can find sysoc.inf by navigating to \Windows\INF\sysoc.inf. If you open the file in Notepad, you should see a list of programs, most of which will be followed by the word "hide." All you have to do is delete the word "hide," and save the file. Now when you go to Add/Remove programs, the unhidden programs will be there. Note that not every program can be removed just because you've unhidden it. For example you can't uninstall terminal services. Sysoc.inf doesn't seem to exist in Windows Vista. Source: DowloadSquad

Vista Firewall Control
License Type: Free Price: Free Operating Systems: Windows Vista File Size: 815KB Author: Sphinx Software Microsoft has been touting the new Windows Firewall in Windows Vista, which it says for the first time includes an outbound filter as well as an inbound filter. Outbound filters are important, because if you've been infected with a Trojan or similar software, it makes an outbound connection without your knowledge, letting someone else take control of your PC. Some malware can also turn your PC into a spam-spewing robot, sending out email without your knowledge. Unfortunately, the outbound filter in Windows Vista is, in essence, turned off by default. And as a practical matter, it's impossible to manually configure it to block malware making outbound connections. That's where the free VistaFirewallControl comes in. Install it, and whenever an application tries to access the Internet, a screen pops up, with the application name, the publisher, and similar information, as well its path and file name. You can enable or disable inbound or outbound connections it tries to make, either permanently, or just this one time. If you're not sure if the program is malware or not, go to www.processlibrary.com and do a search for the file name, for details. All in all, VistaFirewallControl is a great way to make sure your PC isn't making unwanted outbound connections. Download Vista Firewall Control

Safari 3.0.2 for Windows beta
Apple has posted a new beta build of its Safari Web browser for Mac OS X and Windows, Safari 3.0.2 beta. It's available for download now. Safari 3.0.2 for Mac OS X beta features several changes, including the latest security updates, improved stability, and improved WebKit support for Mail, iChat and Dashboard. According to a security note offered by Apple, Safari Beta Update 3.0.2 incorporates the same WebCore and WebKit fixes that Apple published separately on Friday as Security Update 2007-006. Other improvements include a fix in both Mac OS X and Windows versions of Safari that corrects access control to window properties to prevent malicious Web sites from cross-site scripting. A Windows-only issue has been addressed that could cause a Web page to change the contents of the address bar without loading the contents of the corresponding page. Apple notes a variety of improvements planned soon for incorporation into Safari 3, including support for international users, international text input methods, advanced text, localized menus and help, NTLM support and more.
