[Question] Update Packs and Everything Related

First of all, let me say that I realy like working with WinToolkit and appreciate all the hard work that LegoLash20 has put in this this awsome program....Not to mention the pro-active members in the forum.

I am pretty much confortable with my knowledge with most aspects of W7T. However, I am totally baffled on the subject of Update Intergration. I have taken a look at the update catalog, but I have not idea how to sort out what updates I need. The only thing I've been able to decern is that they are all Post windows 7 SP1 updates. I have no clue which ones superceed others or which ones are critical, important, etc.

I have spend a number of hours today going thru the forums here, and over at RyanVM's to find some decent documentation that would help me to undertand the complex mechanics of windows updates in relation to W7T. The only thing that came close to reasonable is a tutorial that i found here...

This tutorial was working out for me till i reached the first step -- downloading SoLorS updates which were all nicely rolled up and ready to go, at least so it seemed. The links are now dead and the tutorial hasn't been updated with anything new, Proceeding to the next available source for getting the update pack only confused me even more. ... KUC, etc...

I would realy like to intergrate Win7 hotfixes into my media without having to resort to using multiple tools. Can anyone with a solid foundation in the mechanics of W7 updates and W7T point me to a tut or doc that can explain how to sort out and identify the updates and tell me the basics of do's and dont's with respect to intergrating 'this update' with 'that update' and and so on. Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

I'm not the best person to answer this but I can get you started in the right direction. Technically I will never fully comprehend how the guys are such experts at differentiating the superseded updates etc but the general forum about all of this is found here: http://forums.mydigi...tfix-repository

McRip http://hotfix.cesidian.info/ and Komm http://windows-update-checker.com/ both maintain the "motherload" of updates along with amazing tools for their use. Komm's KUC is one of my main tools for developing and maintaining my integration's. Burfadel http://burf.cesidian.info/ also has toools and items that I use as well.

If you follow the forum and use their updates and tools you should "learn" what you need but I won't kid you... personally I find this a daunting task and much of that is due to MS not releasing a service pack for so long which means using about 400 updates to maintain an image.

EDIT: For got to mention that WinToolKit has the function to download the updates from McRip's repo and that gives you about 90% of what you need in one shot

Thanks for reply compstuff, I'll your sugestions a try. Just one question. If I download all the updates from McRip's repo within WnToolKit as you sugest, can I just integrate the whole lot and know that WinToolKit will sort out any redundant updates when it comes time to install the build? Will using this brut force approach not break the instllation?

Should I convert .MSU files to CAB prior to intergrating them into my media?

I am new to this, and trying to learn how to do one thing correctly;   Integrate windows updates (all since SP1 was released) into a stock image of win7-x64-SP1.

I still can't seem to find a simple one page description, or even a long document, that describes clearly what to do.

 

My learning steps have been as follows;

 

A.   Google;   Discover update downloader.   Download ALL windows updates since SP1 into a folder.

 

B.   Discover DISM.   Use 7zip to extract a stock W7SP1 ISO image into a folder.   Mount the install.wim file.  Use dism to apply all the updates. 

      Save, Commit.  Use cdimage to burn ISO for testing. Find out it will not work or install (bad or corrupted updates).

 

C.   Google some more,  find forum threads talking about wintoolkit,   use wintoolkit to add all the updates in the folder, still will not work.

       Google again, find out that many updates make others obsolete, others need removal, can't integrate certain updates offline, etc.

 

D.  Google and find KUC.   KUC is said to be the answer.   So I get KUC, read the Getting Started Tutorial in the FAQ section, and have

     a working VM of Windows 7 SP1 with all updates in what KUC thinks are a good order.

 

THE QUESTION:    What to do next?

There does not seem to be any further docuementation anywhere about what you do after running KUC, in order to PROPERLY integrate

updates into a Win7SP1 image.

 

It looks to me (studying the KUC directory C:\WU) that KUC places all the updates into three folders;   REPO, NORMAL, LDR.

Once KUC is run several times and finally reaches a state where there are 0 to ADD and 0 to REMOVE, are those three

folders containing ONLY the proper updates that will integrate OK into my image?   Do I use DISM to integrate all three

folders to an INSTALL.WIM file?   Or, do I use some other toolkit to take a snapshot of this installed and updated VM and

somehow make it back into an installable ISO?   Are there any links to an article or docs that talk accurately about what next?

 

That is the key piece of tutorial that seems missing in all of these web artricles.  If trying to integrate updates into an SP1 ISO,

where and how do you end up with a list or a folder of proper compatible updates that you can just point at DISM or wintoolkit

or some other tool?    This knowledge seems close to impossible to find with Google.

If you know how to mount your image, you can run KUC with a command so that it will scan the offline image and it will skip updates that cannot be integrated offline, or are not recommended to be integrated offline.

 

KUC W7 UpdateChecker.exe /DVD-Image-dir:<path_to_mounted_image>

After you scan, you can run the Update CMD. It now has the command and path to integrate the updates into your mounted image

There are other command line switches for KUC (like /OnlyCabs /VHD-drive: /up-dir: /repo-dir:,) you can read all about these in the FAQ

I want to ask about McRips's updates. It creates these folders in additional folder:

 

 

I leave out "old" (If I get it right they are replaced updates)

I add IE10 and leave out the IE 10 releace preview.

And ALL updates in the root uppdates directory.

 

My problem is that I'm still asked to download updates when installation is finished. (The last time I had all latest updates, I checked that these were not office updates)

 

Can anyone tell me if I leave outside something important?

If you take a look at my latest ini you will see all the files from McRip that I use... I think this will help you see what your missing and how to apply the various items... please keep in mind that I choose to add many items that I am sure others leave out.

You mean that you're adding some extras that windows can "survive" without and windows update does not provide them in suggested and  optional updates. Is that right? 

 

I've tried also to find an explanation for each folder but I can't find it. Is there one, do I have to search more?
