Sorry no screenshot. This file is a replacement for your original systemfile in \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. It contains a list of websites with spyware, trojans etc. This websites will be blocked automatically and the address of the website will be rerouted to 127.0.0.1

One questions, I put the HOSTS file manually to \Windows\system32\drivers\etc. At restart the computer works toooo slow, the CPU is at 100%. When I delete this file the PC works as before.

The PC is C2D E6420, MSI P35, 2GB RAM. Can you give me a hint?

Quote: "this is a known issue on Win2k, XP & Vista. The remedy for XP is as follows:

To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor"

* Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes)

* Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties

* Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"

* Select: Manual, or Disabled (recommended) click Apply/Ok and restart. [more info]

When set to Manual you can see that the above "Service" is not needed (after a little browsing) by opening the Services Editor again, scroll down to DNS Client and check the "Status" column. It should be blank, if it was needed it would show "Started" in that column." Unquote

The page I gleaned this from is here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

I did know that modifying hosts file boosts internet much, but it used to lock my computer come minutes after "first connecting to internet", as Angel 5 stated. But i didnt know that disabling dns service resolves this issue. Also after replacing my hosts file, one of svchost.exe services (in taskmanager) has became bigger than 30000 kb. Is it same at urs?
