jamesbebby Posted November 9, 2009 Posted November 9, 2009 hi, i havin trouble with this... ive downloaded VMware Workstation 7.0.0 Build 203739 Final with Tools its 512 MB, i cant extract it like i use to with v6, Universal Extractor is com up with "error cannot be extracted" so i click on it to start the original install when its finish extracting itself i go to Users\James\AppData\Local\Temp\vmware_1257789307 and all of the files are there with .cab files just like bjfrog said in one of the posts above, so i follow on breaking down the original .msi with Universal Extractor when done im left with i vmware workstation folder in there is 7 folders and vmware workstation.msi. now i copy over bjfrogs vmware workstation.msi extract with Universal Extractor then in that folder i 7zip it up to make i installer that works but it ends up beenin 215 MB not "less than 32MB" like Uncle_Gadget.please give us a hand?cheers james Quote

You're adding file to this directory which is why it is so large. If you rename bjfrog's msi file to something like 'Vmware Workstation Lite.msi' and THEN run the Universal Extractor you will be left with a much smaller directory named 'Vmware Workstation Lite'. This directory when compressed with 7-Zip should be just under 32MB when compressed and should work as a fully functional installer. Good Luck!Uncle Gadget Quote

bjfrog Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 bjfrog (or others)Has anyone had any luck creating a slimmed down tools installer? None of the methods I've used past versions are working with v8.1.3, build203739.Uncle Gadget thedexmonster already made one addon for us,it work already tested on running guest machine, not yet test integrating into xpcd.VMWARE changed the method for installing vmware tools not include into MSI from v7, several execute files instead of that, double click tools-windows-8.1.3.exe for installing windows vmware tools,"/s" for silent install,"/e" can extract to a folder then you can create a smaller installer about 26MB,because of digital signature checking ISO file cant be slimmed down,im not going to touch ISO unless find one way to make it work without signature. DarkRay Posted November 12, 2009 Posted November 12, 2009 (edited) hi, cheers lads i done it not quite the same as is posted but it works. here how i done it, thank jamesusing this method there is a file that is not copied:System32\drivers\stcp2v30.syslooking at the properties of the file I see it is: StorageCraft Volume Snapshot Driver, this file is very importart for snapshots.I suppose that is not included in the msi by bjfrog Edited November 12, 2009 by DarkRay Quote
bjfrog Posted November 14, 2009 Posted November 14, 2009 (edited) @ Darkray: stcp2v30 is a component belong to the feature P2V and P2V is already removed in MSI file, it doesnt matter to snapshot a guest,my fault include it on the list, sorry about that.i have another one ,Size:1.73 MB (1,818,421 bytes) MD5:484eb5ab151f4b7a617cd0dee9f14383some features is diabled ,some components is deleted, not expect it work flawlessly,i'll test it on a clean xpsp3 environment, just need some time to reinstall OS,thanks the trick to use "msiexec /a",its very handy to fetch files we need. redrum Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Phenomonal job, bjfrog! My installer is now less than 32MB. I also like how you didn't just delete the unused features, you only flagged them not to install. Using this method, I was also able to create a 64-bit installer just by re-enabling the 64 bit components.I did notice one feature that I think you can also easily exclude - WSJaDocs feature (below Docs). Either that, or just turn off installation for the entire Docs feature. Thanks, again, for building on Ricks hard work!Uncle GadgetEdit: I just realized that WSJaDocs is disabled as it is a sub-feature of Japanese Docs. Still, it might work as well by turning off the entire Docs feature.can you please post the x64 version. Quote

radigast Posted November 22, 2009 Posted November 22, 2009 (edited) Edit: Just read the entire thread...found that the answer to my question has already been discussed. Sorry about that...Hey Ricktendo64:Thanks for the great VMWare package! I religiously downloaded this version to add to my silent install dvds.Do you plan on continuing to update this slimmed down VMWare with new versions that come out (ie: VMware Workstation 7.0 Build 203739 - 10/27/2009), or are you officially finished with this addon?Just curious, as I am updating programs to put on a new Windows 7 silent install dvd and am not sure if I should wait for your addon or download the whole package...Thanks!
