WLM 8.1 chat message sounds when in focus

Windows live messenger 8.1, anyone now how to make WLM still notify me of a new message when the chat window is in focus?

i have to click on a space on the desktop to get the sound to happen, i noticed that my old version of trillian does this when in or out of focus.

is there a registry hack i could use to fool WLM into thinking its always out of focus?

find it annoying that if i have go AFK that i dont know the conversation has continued or they are still typing etc when in focus.
